Austin is Awesome

If you’re looking to make a move to the great state of Texas, we strongly recommend the state capital, Austin. This lively city has an abundance of parks and lakes perfect for hiking, swimming, biking, boating, and other outdoor activities. Soak in the nightlife as you walk down streets lined with a variety of restaurants and live music. We’ve put together a list of things to do and places to stay that really highlight why Austin is awesome.

What To Do

Roy and Ann Butler Hike and Bike Trail

The 10 mile trail is situated in the heart of Austin surrounding Lady Bird Lake giving walkers, joggers, and bikers wonderful views of the city skyline, parks, and lake wildlife. Stop along the way at a number of spots and shady tree areas or head into one of the many restaurants just off the trail. You can also rent a kayak and paddle the lake to get a different perspective!

Barton Springs Pool

Located in Zilker Park, the Barton Springs Pool is considered the crown jewel of Austin. This 3 acre pool is formed by underground springs and averages a comfortable 68-70 degrees year round. The area is surrounded by trees and grassy areas perfect for having a picnic on a hot summer day. There is a $3 entry fee for adults, but it’s well worth it to cool down on a hot summer day in Austin.

Visit 6th Street

6th Street is the heart of Austin’s entertainment scene, which has been dubbed the “Live Music Capital of the World”. The street is lined with historic houses and buildings which now house bars, entertainment venues, shops, restaurants, art galleries, and more! 6th Street is always full of an eclectic group of people, great music, and excellent food options. What’s not to like?

Where To Dine

When you think about Texas, you immediately think of barbecue. While Austin has some of the most famous barbecue in the country, it’s also home to a variety of different types of cuisines with influences from all over the world. Hope you enjoy!

Breakfast

Torchy’s Tacos opened back in 2006 and has been serving damn good tacos ever since, especially for breakfast. “The Wrangler” and “Migas” are two of our favorite options to start your day off right. There are multiple locations around Austin so you’re never too far away to experience their delicious tacos. If you miss them at breakfast, they’re also open for lunch and dinner too!

Lunch

Franklin Barbecue is considered the best BBQ in Austin, if not the best in the USA. Franklin BBQ is famous for their succulent beef brisket but also serves sausages, pulled pork, and ribs. Make sure to get there well before they open at 11 AM to stand in line with fellow die hard barbecue fans, considered by some to be a ritual. Trust us though, you will be rewarded for your wait!

Dinner

Uchi Owner and Executive Chef Tyson Cole (Best Chef: Southeast in 2011) opened the restaurant in 2005 and it has been a favorite ever since. Uchi has seafood flown in daily from the Tsukiji market in Tokyo and pairs it with local seasonal ingredients. From hot and cool tastings to sushi and sashimi, the combination of Japanese flavors with new, refreshing flavor and textures will leave you speechless.

Happy Hour

Parkside

Parkside is located in the aforementioned 6th St. district and was the city’s first gastro-pub when it opened back in 2008. Happy hour is available in the entire restaurant Monday-Friday from 5:00-6:30pm. Enjoy half off all beer, liquor, and the entire bar food menu! The Lump Crab Fritters and the Oyster Platter are fan favorites off the bar menu. Stop by Parkside on “Martini Monday” to enjoy half off specialty martinis like The Garden or Strawberry Sunshine. After happy hour is over, either sit down on the outdoor patio for dinner or take a walk down 6th St. to enjoy the live music and entertainment!

Keep In Mind

On top of the delicious brick and mortar restaurants in Austin, food trailers/trucks are very popular throughout the city. La Barbecue has picnic tables, live music, and free beers on weekends to go with their delicious brisket, that some say rivals Franklin Barbecue. East Side Kings is another local favorite with 2 trucks and 3 in-bar spots. They serve Asian inspired dishes perfect for late night snacking or a quick bite to eat at lunch.
