Moving Out Of Your Apartment: 6 Essential Tasks

Moving out of an apartment can be both an overwhelming and stressful time for any renter. To avoid any surprising setbacks during the move-out process or hefty fines, creating a plan of action can be key to a successful move.

Although it’s important to read your lease and talk with your landlord about what is expected of you and your specific apartment at the end of your lease term, we’ve compiled a list of some key tasks anyone should keep in mind to ensure an easy and efficient move out!

Furniture

Some apartment communities, like Level 27, College ParkThe Reserve on West 31st and The Lodge on the Trail provide their residents with fully furnished units. If you’re in the same boat, you’ll want to make sure that the furniture is left in good condition for your landlord. Take some time to wipe down each piece of furniture, and check each closely for any excessive wear and tear.

Pet Damages

If you or your roommate own a pet, like many residents at The Village at Bluegrass, South Duff, The Lofts and The Pavilion, it is essential to double check your apartment for any unforeseen carpet stains, chewed furniture, or excessive hair.

If your apartment includes a detached garage or patio area (like at Gateway Lakes and Worthington Meadows), you’ll also want to check those areas for any pet-related damages or messes.

Appliances

If your rental provides you with any appliances, give each a decent clean before you move, and make sure that any maintenance issues are brought to the attention of your landlord.

This is especially important for renters at Hilltop Club, The Landing, The Connection and The Reserve at Athens, that are provided with full appliance packages in their kitchens and washer dryers inside their units.

Even if the appliance is your own, move out time is the perfect time to give it a much needed scrub!

Roommates

If you live with roommates, have a discussion before move out day to divvy up tasks and coordinate move out times.

Especially if you share common areas such as living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms (like the residents at The Commons at Tallahassee and The Commons on Kinnear), it’s crucial to make clear to-do lists for each roommate so that no area gets left unchecked.

Walls

Renters who may have hung up photos or items on their apartment walls (or painted accent walls with decor, like the residents at Cayce Cove), should be sure to fill in any holes to avoid any damage fees.

Plan Ahead

One of the biggest pains of move-out day is physically moving your belonging and furniture! Plan accordingly for any obstacles you may encounter.

If you live in a high-rise building or large complex (like at CityView, 100 Midtown , The Jerome or Eastwood Village), consider hiring professional movers that are experienced in lifting heavy furniture and all sorts of building types. Lastly, if you plan on using a truck, be sure to create a plan for parking around your building on move-out day.
